I opened up some ‘99 Seghesio Barolo “La Villa” yesterday, gassed about a quarter bottle, and returned to it today.
I tell ya’, though I’ve had disagreements with folks on this point, I really think the ‘99 Barolos are drinking very nicely, and are a good “restaurant vintage”. This one, the La Villa, reinforces my belief.
It’s quite dark, and the aromas suggest a definite ripeness under the more classic leather, soil, and truffle. Alcohol is present, too. The attack is only slightly astringent, with plenty of texture and black berry, coffee, and slightly bitter anise notes. It unfolds pretty gracefully, and is very savory.
Though not what I consider to be a classical Barolo profile, it is nonetheless elegant and composed, and is quite enjoyable. It will probable be improve with some mid-term cellaring, say 7-10 years, but I’d have a hard time not drinking this now! In my fantasy “Ideal World”, where everyday is a day for Barolo, I can see this having a place!
It’s a $42 retail, which I think is pretty good for a wine of this quality.
